Monica Maria Muñoz-Alzate is an orchestral performer, chamber musician and teacher. As an active chamber and orchestral musician, she regularly plays with the Lyrica Chamber Orchestra in Syracuse and has performed with the New World Symphony Orchestra, Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra and Iberacademy in Colombia.
Born in Colombia, Ms. Muñoz-Alzate received her bachelor of music from EAFIT University in Medellin. After moving to the U.S., she received her master of music degree from Louisiana State University with academic honors. At these schools, she studied with world-renowned violin teachers Espen Lilleslatten, Williams Naranjo and Gonzalo Ospina. She is recently doing her OPT while studying with Laura Bossert, Associate Professor of Violin & Viola at Setnor School of Music in Syracuse.
In the last few years, Ms. Muñoz-Alzate has attended music festivals such as Aspen Music Festival and School, LyricaFest, Femusc and Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival. She has participated in master classes taught by renowned violinists such as Charlie Castelman, Laura Bossert, Terry King, Paul Kantor, Roberto González and Anne Setzer.
As a teacher, Ms. Muñoz-Alzate spent two years teaching at Kids’ Orchestra which is a program that adopted the principles of El Sistema to spark social change in the Baton Rouge community in Louisiana where she also performed educational concerts as a part of the Community Performances. Her passion for community engagement led to be part of Iberacademy because she wants to help change her country and anywhere else’s mentality that doesn’t think of music as a necessity in any community.
Ms. Muñoz-Alzate began her violin studies at the age of six in Medellin. When she is not busy with the violin, she enjoys practicing yoga, cooking, hiking and watching movies. Her violin is generously on loan from Iberacademy.
