Oscar Hernandez leads an enriching career as a collaborative pianist, pedagogue, arts administrator, and music director.
As the founder of Kernersville Music Academy, he leads a team of nine faculty to provide professional music education to the Kernersville community. In addition to private lessons, the Kernersville Music Academy faculty participate in an outreach program that brings performances, educational programs, and musical collaboration to local schools and retirement and rehabilitation centers.
Mr. Hernandez started the music director portion of his career at an early age of fifteen when he was appointed Music Director for Good Shepherd Catholic Church in King, NC, where he eventually became the Director of Sacred Music. During his tenure there from February 2007 to August 2016, he prepared the musical liturgy, directed music for all masses in the parish, and guided youth from the parish to share their talents in the Music Ministry. From 2012 to 2015 he additionally served as Music Minister at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church where he was tasked with helping guide the Hispanic Music Ministry to a proficient and independent level. In August of 2017 he was appointed Organist at Trinity Moravian church where he would later become Music Director in June of 2019. His tenure at Trinity would conclude at the end of August the same year. He has recently been appointed as Director of Sacred Music at Holy Cross Catholic Parish in Kernersville where they minister to 1800 families. He is delighted to join the Holy Cross Catholic Parish family, work with all of the wonderful musicians in the parish, and continue using his talents to serve the Kernersville Community.
Mr. Hernandez has served as Adjunct Piano Faculty at Bennett College since the Fall of 2018 where he is tasked with preparing students for the Piano Proficiency Examination as well as teaching piano and conducting masterclasses.
While at UNC School of the Arts for his graduate studies with Dr. Allison Gagnon, he had the privilege of working with guest artists Warren Jones, Stephan Boving, and Stefan Rütter, and had additional studies with Eric Larsen.
Mr. Hernandez holds a baccalaureate degree from Wingate University in Music with a concentration in piano as well as a Master of Music Degree from UNC School of the Arts in Collaborative Piano.
